Top Tips To Banish Dry Skin

Caring for dry skin can be a challenge at times

Skin is a beautiful thing, however dry skin if not balanced correctly can be left looking dull, lifeless, sallow and aged. The texture can appear uneven, flaky, and unwillingly enhance the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, often making a person look older beyond their years.

The term ‘dry’ is used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum (oil) than normal skin. The lack of sebum and lipids makes it less effective in retaining the skins' protective barrier against external influences.

To combat these influences and factors - such as nasty cell destroying free radicals, dry skin must be kept balanced, the acid mantle must remain intact and overall, the skin needs to be well hydrated.

During the younger and adolescent years dry skin can be a blessing, as this skin type produces less sebum than other skin types, and as a result it is less likely that pustules, comedones, acne or any other type of breakout will form.

However, like with all skin types as ageing starts to take place, changes in the skin become more apparent, and in particular the moisture content reduces.

As dry skin ages it’s of extreme importance to keep this moisture content high, the acid mantle protected and cells intact.

Try these tips to soothe your dry skin:

Rule #1 - Wash your face with lukewarm water

Avoid stripping your skin of essential oils, which ultimately can cause it to feel drier.

Rule #2 - Cleanse gently

When you have dry skin, it’s important to choose a cleanser that is gentle and does not strip your skin of its natural oils. Merindah Botanicals Uplifting Cleanser hydrates and soothes your skin.

Rule #3 - Exfoliate

Dull looking skin is caused by dead skin cell build up on the surface of your skin. Regular exfoliation can help to slough off the build up.

So, if you have dry skin, try adding a Konjac Sponge to your skin care routine. Konjac Sponges are very gentle on your skin and can be used daily.

Keep in mind that regular facial scrubs are not as gentle and should only be used on a weekly basis. Over-exfoliation can cause your skin to become even more dry.

Rule #4 - Moisturise damp skin

The best time to apply moisturiser is after cleansing, when your skin is still damp. So when you hop out of the shower or finished cleansing your face, don’t towel off but trap in the moisture.

Keeping your skin well hydrated will also be of great benefit as it will absorb skincare products much better into your skin.

If we take a spilt glass of water for example and use a dry sponge to soak up the spill, the sponge will absorb only a limited amount of water taking a dampened sponge to begin with will achieve a much better result.

The skin works in a similar way, keep it well hydrated and receive better results from topical products and treatments.

A proper daily skincare routine together with a well balanced diet and regular exercise are all key factors in maintaining optimum health for dry skin.

In summary dry skin along with all skin types requires daily maintenance to enhance ones natural beauty and radiance.
