7 Bad Skin Habits You Need To Break

From sleeping with your makeup on to smoking, bad skin habits are abundant — and they can prevent you from achieving the glowing, clear skin you want.

Stop these beauty flaws and you'll be on the road to healthy skin.

The consequences of bad skin habits can range from mild irritation to an increased risk of skin cancer. If you aren’t seeing the clear skin you want, take a moment to review your skin care regimen.

The following bad skin habits are very common — chances are you’ll find at least one that you can change in your pursuit of healthy skin.

1. Makeup

Falling asleep with your makeup on can lead to bacterial infections and clogged pores which can cause acne. Keep makeup removing wipes next to your bed so you’ll never make this beauty mistake again. Allow your skin to breathe to avoid premature aging.

2. Skipping sunscreen

Get in the habit of wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Apply it everywhere on your body that could be exposed to the sun before you go outside.

You are not only increasing the risk of premature aging but also - more serious - risk of skin cancer, including the most serious kind, melanoma. Many people neglect to put on sunscreen and then find themselves outside, unprotected, for longer than they expected.

3. Popping, picking and scratching

Stress, skin rashes, breakouts and insect bites are common reasons that people pick at or scratch otherwise healthy skin. When you start scratching at the skin, it causes an itch-scratch cycle. The least you touch your skin, in particular your face.

Popping, picking and scratching at the skin will only push dirt and bacteria deeper into pores, resulting in more breakouts and the risk of infection - as hard as it is, keep your hands away!

4. Alcohol & nicotine

Just one more reason why you’ll want to reduce – or even better quit – the intake of alcohol and nicotine. Drinking too much alcohol can dehydrate your skin leaving it quenched for moisture. Without that moisture you are more prone to wrinkles and dryness and nicotine can cause skin sagging and speed up the wrinkle process.

5. Stay hydrated

Hydration starts from the inside out. If you want to make sure your skin is hydrated, your body must be hydrated, too. Good hydration on the inside and out provides your skin cells what they need to stay healthy. Be sure to drink enough water. It will not only help to fight off aging, but also gives your skin a healthy glow.

6. Forgetting skin from the neck down

Two problems can arise from neglecting the rest of your body, even as you care for your face: dry areas and sun damage. People often moisturize their face but forget about the other parts of their body, which can also become dry and cracked and even wrinkly.

7. Hot showers

While many of us love super-hot, long showers but the heat from the shower can strip the skin of its natural moisture and irritate dry skin. Turn down the heat and take a shorter shower.

Try to break those habits to keep your skin youthful and radiant.
